Overview
During the past number of years many organizations have evolved and changed the way in which they manage their workforce. This project examines the shift in many organizations from the traditional ‘Personnel Department’ (PM), to the principals of the more recently formed ‘Human Resource Management’ (HRM) function.

Both are seen as the management of people in business; however HRM is the development of these practices to utilize ‘people’ as a resource, more effectively in order to obtain a competitive advantage.

PM is that part of management traditionally concerned with people at work and their relationships with an enterprise. It involves three distinct activities; Employee resourcing, Employee development and Employee relations.

HRM is a distinctive approach to employment which seeks to achieve competitive advantage through the strategic deployment of a highly committed and capable workforce using a variety of cultural, structural and personnel techniques.
HRM strives to attract, retain and develop high caliber individuals. Emphasis is therefore put upon managing an organizational culture, giving a sense of direction and leadership within the organization.
