The use of capital punishment, more notably the death sentence, is a very heated debate in the United States. The debate has always been an issue, but it really has not been debated over as much as it has since the 1970’s when it was re-institutionalized. Most of this debate centers on moral dilemmas. It is hard to obtain an unbiased opinion on the research that can be found about the death penalty because most of the information comes from anti death penalty organizations such as Amnesty International, and the Death Penalty Information Center. It breaks down into two major schools of thought; should the United States continue to use the death penalty, or shouldn’t it. I believe that it should.
The Oxford English Dictionary states that capital punishment is “the legally authorized killing of someone as punishment for a crime.” This punishment has been handed down since before the time of recorded history. I also believe that the death penalty is an effective measure against heinous crimes, and also helps to deter possible future criminals from such acts.
Some people and organizations who oppose the death sentence feel that this...
