A.Why are you interested in this position and what special skills /knowledge/ experiences would you bring to it?

Before I attended the LeaderShape® program this year, I did not have a deep perception of what “the vision” for my life entailed. Through that awesome leadership experience, it was revealed that “the vision” for my life is to make aid people from the ages of 14-22 to reach their True full potential. I view serving as a Resident Counselor (RC) or Activities Counselor as an opportunity to pour positive knowledge, wisdom, and encouragement into new SYP students and returning students, while fulfilling a portion of “the vision” I have been called to fulfill. As for past experiences, I have served as an ExSEL mentor at Michigan Tech since 2005, and I currently work in the Office of Student Records and Registration.

B.Describe any past experience working with youth in a leadership position.

In 2004 and 2006, I served as a Residence Councilor (RC) for the Michigan Tech (MTU) Summer Youth Programs. The most rewarding aspect of serving as an RC was watching students develop and grow into enthusiastic young adults, and knowing that I had some impact. Today there are at least three students that I mentored or lived in my hall during the 2004 term who are currently matriculating at MTU.

In 2003, I became a member of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). Due to the leadership opportunities available at MTU, I was able to serve as Regional Membership Chair, Vice Chair, Chair, and currently Parliamentarian within NSBE. In the capacity of Chair, I served a regional membership body of initially 2,700 and throughout the year grew to 4,800 members in the course of one year. I selected this account to discuss because I can attest to incoming students or those uninvolved how being actively involved in campus organizations can be rewarding...
