The topic that the article, “River Plan Too Fishy for my Taste Buds” by Bill McEwen shows a lot of credibility by proving the plan of going on with the river rights project should not be allowed and I chose this because McEwen convinced me throughout his article. He showed me his credibility and he can be trusted with all the experience he has. His article can be trusted because it was published in the Fresno Bee, March 26,2009. He publics this because he believes the project is unhelpful or meaningful. The city of Fresno is hard working not that wealthy. It is also one of the fastest growing population country with a usual weather of high temperature. On the other side the other article was published in The Sacramento Bee, April 26,2009. Meanwhile…

    Sweedens Swamp Case Study

Sweedens Swamp is a functioning red maple swamp which provides wildlife habitat for a variety of birds, mammals, and amphibians, and provides flood storage capacity, groundwater discharge and water purification. Pyramid 's proposed shopping mall will result in the destruction of approximately 45 out of 49 acres of this wetland. Thirty two acres would be permanently destroyed. Filling Sweedens Swamp would be the largest authorized wetland loss in Massachusetts in at least 5 years. Pyramid has offered to recreate other wetlands on the site. Doing so would result in the at least temporary destruction of 13 of the remaining 17 acres of wetland habitat. However, the mall proposed by Pyramid would provide many jobs to the area and provide tax revenues, making the area potentially more economically stable. Still wetland losses may not be necessary in order to have a quality regional shopping mall.…

In the third section of John McPhee's Encounters with the Archdruid, the author observes the discourse between conservationist David Brower and Commissioner of the Bureau of Reclamation, Floyd Dominy, on the merits of dams in the southwestern United States. Brower "hates all dams, large and small," while Dominy sees dams as essential to our civilization. The Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell, which Dominy created, are the main issue of debate between the two men.…

Daniel Weintraub in the article,”River Restoration Project Offer a Sprinkling of Hope”, claim that only 20 %of the water was recovered. Weintraub supports his statement by telling us that they had restoration plan to help them get most of their water back one way or another. The author’s purpose is to prove that at least they can get some of the water back in order so that the people can help them out and can use less water. The progress that supports this include salmon successfully living in the San Joaquin river counters McEwen’s belief that salmons will be unable to survive in the revitalized river. The idea that the plan is a boondoggle has also been rejected since it clearly benefited many people. Furthermore, recent results of the restoration program display how the farmers were not greedy because they gave up their water and farmland for the recovery of the San Joaquin river. These few points depict the inaccuracy of McEwen’s expectations of the project and show how the San Joaquin is developing so…

    Klamath River Case Study

    • 596 Words
    • 3 Pages

Many years ago, efforts began to tear down four dams that were established along the Klamath River, the main issue being that the water diversions and dams had greatly disrupted Klamath’s salmon population, they needed to be destroyed in order to reestablish their upstream habit, and dismantling them would open up hundreds of miles of the Klamath River for coho salmon. This was a combined effort made through cooperation, negotiation, and compromise between very different people.…

Bill McEwin in the article “River Plan to fishy for my taste buds”, states that some people are suffering more than others. McEwin supports his claim by saying there is two major problems: 1. No salmon 2. No money. The others purpose is to inform you of government decided plans and how they can hurt many people in order to show that others are suffering because of this poorly made decision and how a once flowing river is now nothing more than a dried up desert. The author wrote in an informative/opinionated tone for the…

    2. What is the major claim Weintraub makes? I agree with your statements about the similarities of the Combahee River Collective Statements and the topics of each writer presented this week’s readings. Inter-sectionality is really essential so that we can understand the problem of women who are most at disadvantaged because of multiple factors. In addition, the other similarity I found is the issue that women of color have to deal within the feminist movement. The problem is that the white feminist movement fails to include the problems and concerns of women of color. The Combahee River Collective Statement talks about the racism within the feminist movement and they also discuss that it is the duty of white women’s movement to combat their issue with racism.…

Lush green grasses that flourish using the water from a winding river sit in the middle of a colorful valley. It is a beautiful sanctuary where people come to visit and take in all it has to offer. A valley that will never be seen for the valley now sits under a reservoir. The image of a church under water is an effective way to persuade any audience that the damn built to flood Hetch Hetchy valley ruined one of nature’s beautiful sanctuaries.…

He also refers to it as “Natures Cathedral”. To ignore the fact that it was an important area for economic gain is a short-sided decision. The Dam in Hetch Hetchy Valley should not have been built. The supposed immediate need for water as Alexander Paul Dejesse posted was not as “immediate” as the lobbyist made it out to be. There would have been time to source it from another source not so unique as Hetch Hetchy. A source perhaps a bit farther away but not in a protected area and perhaps not downstream from sewage. Even though the argument was pushed in a way suggesting that water to the residence was of upmost importance I believe the underlying importance was to harness the electricity that water could provide. This was in every way an economical decision disguised as a plight of the…

This assumption is that the budget for another part of cit maintenance or building will be tapped into to. In addition, to the budget being used to clean up Mason River, it will also be allocated in increasing riverside recreational facilites. The government is trying to appease its residents, and one can warrant that the role of the government is to please the people. There are many assumptions being made; however, the government can not make the assumption that people want the river to be cleaned so that they can use it for recreational water activities. The government has to realize the long term effects that their decision will have on the monetary value of their…

The process includes provisions for habitat restoration, hatchery production, and predator control. Nevertheless, the plan still calls for no significant changes to the region's federal hydropower system and ignores the four dams on the lower Snake River that do the most harm to the basin's endangered salmon. Moreover, the new plan does not include any increases in the amount of water spilled over the dams to improve critical downstream migration. In fact, the water that could be used as spill over water in efforts to aid the salmon in their migration, is claimed by the federal government to create even more hydroelectric power. Ultimately, this use of excess, spill over water seems unrighteous towards salmon in the Pacific Northwest…

The Mythic River is a river in Falsetto Island, the island of the city of Mumbai. It is a confluence of tail water discharges of Powai and Vihar lakes. The river is seasonal and rises during the monsoons. The overflowing lakes also contribute to the river flow which is stopped by a dam in other times. During this season the river is a favourite with the anglers who catch large fish that have escaped from the lakes. The river originates from the overflow of Vihar Lake and also receives the overflows from the Powai Lake about 2 km later. It flows for a total of 15 km before it meets the Arabian Sea at Mahim Creek flowing through residential and industrial complexes of Powai, Saki Naka, Kalina, Vakola, Bandra-Kurla complex, Dharavi and Mahim. The river has an average width of 5 m in the upper reaches, has been widened to 25 m in the middle reaches and up to 70 m in the lower reaches after the 26 July 2005 deluge (944 mm in 24 h on 26 July 2005).It is also less well known that the Mahim bay area, where Mithi River meets Arabian Sea is a nominated bird sanctuary where migratory birds come for nesting. This part is full of mangroves. When the river was not as polluted as it is today, it used to serve as an important storm water drain for Mumbai but as it has been used as a sewer over the years, its importance as a storm water drain has reduced and on the contrary, it poses as a hazard during high tide bringing polluted water into the city. Mithi has become synonymous with all the ills which a river is experiencing such as encroachment of flood plains, storm water drainage and disposal of untreated sewage and liquid waste. The Mithi River originates at an altitude of 246 m above sea level, in the hills located in the east of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, gathers water from the streams and spillway discharges of the Tulsi, Vihar, and Powai Lakes, and travels 17.84 kms to the Mahim bay.…
