Starving America
I have found that many Americans are starving to death where there is so much food for the taking, but because we are the fussiest people in the world regarding food; it seems to be that we are starving. Americans, to me, just happen to be huge “food snobs.” We turn our noses up at anything that might not look pleasing to the eye. Other than vegetables, America does not eat raw food or anything unappealing. This may very well be an unconscious psychological issue.
In an article entitled “Aversion to Food,” the author goes through the four different types of food aversions. The two that I found most interesting were the disgusting and distasteful food aversions. These two aversions are not the type to make you severely sick, dangerous aversion, or something that is not a food, inappropriate aversion. These are just two different aversions that are, to me, more of a psychological issue rather than any kind of safety issue. It seems as if it is more of a personal and cultural choice. It seems as though these two aversions are more psychological than real solid proof, in no way is food actually bad for you unless it is completely spoiled, so much so that the food is not easily recognized in it’s finished state. There are some foods out there that no matter what, we just do not want in our bellies. Many Jewish people will not eat dairy or meat because it is against their religion, not because it can kill you or make you sick.
Many things have to do with not knowing. The problem is that someone might not eat something for fear that it “might” make you sick because of not knowing what it is. This could be a valid point, if only it were a valid point. Most Americans will not even touch something unless it “looks” good. This, in most cases, is why many foods in their raw form go uneaten by Americans.
