A personal world view of higher education which stemmed from a family of migrants whom previously had low levels of education, impacted on my own personal thoughts of higher learning and achievement. To attain a standard of success both personal and financially well in advance of my family’s previous circumstances, which was in tune with my then current affluent social group surroundings.
Having my world view and how I see myself in a learning environment, stemmed greatly from a perspective that to achieve from a personal and financial stand-point, one must have a higher education. This perspective grew from being brought up in a family of migrants, who had no or very little previous education and the implications that they assumed with this thinking. They held their own personal view that education equals success in a financial and personal aspect. This pressure from my family to achieve a standard of education well above what they had seen before in their own lives impacted greatly on my personal world view. This underlying belief also came from social surroundings of others whom I grew up with, as these people had large volumes of financial abundance and my willingness to be like them could be achieved through financial (stemming from educational) success.
My family, who were second generation migrants, wanted me to strive for the higher educated purpose, neither my mother nor father held the education or lifestyle opportunities that I had when growing up. As Hobson (1996, pg. 6) discusses ‘Everybody is different. When we recognise that we are all different selves and we all live in different social worlds there can no longer be a form of knowledge which covers everything’. My parents saw growing up in world that allowed for greater expression of one’s thoughts, a more concise type of education system, which allowed for greater opportunity to achieve.
