In order to understand India, one needs to understand its villages. Behind Mud Walls does a great job in providing a detailed background of an ordinary village life in India. Since seventy percent of Indians live in villages, it is important to learn about village lifestyle and the changes that take place in it. Only then one can learn about the cities because one needs to understand the relationship between the two in India. Behind Mud Walls provides the opportunity to examine a north Indian village from a non-Indian point of view; in other words, a non-biased point of view. Since the book is broken up into parts by years, it gives the reader a great way to examine the changes that take place in this village; it shows how it was then and how it is now. Karimpur in 1930 was very different from Karimpur in the 80’s and 90’s. Many changes were observed by Wisers and Susan Wadley, who writes the later chapters in the book. These changes were social, economic, educational, technological, political and cultural but most significant of these were social, and educational. Being entrusted to direct a summer camp for twenty-eight counselors and ninety campers has taught me to become a more versatile and confident leader. The Indian-American summer camp, from planning to production, is entirely student-run. The camp is very close to my heart as I previously was a camper. The camp allowed me to build friendships with my peers and my counselors, whom I looked up to as role models. It provided a support system for me as I was able to connect with people who could relate to me. I was incredibly humbled and driven to preserve the camp's legacy.…

At the India Community Center, there were summer camp classes offered that taught children from five to twelve years old about Indian music, dance, art, geography, and languages. One of the weeks centered around the vast varieties of food found from the different regions of India. We made chaat, pani puri, and mango lassi while learning about the cultural significance of each cuisine. The kids also learned the Indian national anthem and a Bollywood dance that was then performed for the parents at the end of the week. As we sang, cooked, and danced, we gained a better understanding of ourselves, our racial identity, and how beautiful and interesting our culture is. Each kid learned…

With my parents’ increasing support of my interest to learn more about and visit the land of my ancestors, we decided to travel to India a couple of summers ago.…

The Educational tour started out as an escape from school for most of us students, bonding with friends, chance to unwind and of course, to learn new things and to gain knowledge at the same time that we may apply someday.…

As I looked through my shelf for a journal to read, I saw an especially old and dirty book. I took it out and on the cover page, it read, “Sweet Memories”. I flipped through the pages and noticed that the edges of the pages were yellowed and with mildew on it. However, as I turned to the back page, I saw a picture of me having a soccer match in school during sports day. Then, I started to recollect the incidents on that fateful day.…
