Software in the Workplace
Ever wonder how major airlines run so smoothly? Airlines today use computers and computer software through out daily functions. Software is utilized for aircraft flight plans, maintenance, and internal operations.
Passengers may not realize the amount of software and computers that involved in a single flight. Pilots file their flight plans with a central data bank and it will tell the cockpit crew the most direct and safest route to take. (Sabresolutions, 2006) Information will include suggested altitude and communications checkpoints through out the journey. The computer gives the pilots a road map of the skies to follow.
The aircraft itself is equipped with several computers that register every moment of the very specialized piece of equipment. Crewmembers are able to control everything about the aircraft, from the angle of the flaps and spoilers to the temperature and airflow of the cabin. This makes the maintenance job a little easier as well. The aircraft will go in for a series of maintenance checks on a semi-annual biases. (Feldman, 2001) Computers and airline software will give them information needed to replace or repair any malfunctioning parts.
An internal operation of a major airline is a complex and intricate system. Our software even has a name, Sabre. Developed in the early 1960s, Sabre has been the brainchild of American Airlines President C.R. Smith and R. Blair Smith, a senior sales representative for IBM. (Sabresolutions, 2006) Airline personnel have federal regulation that must be followed. Limits on hours flown in a 24-hour period as well as minimum crew requirements are just a few factors our Sabre system must deal with. Each month crews bid for schedules. Seniority always prevails. Bids are sent to the crew-planning department through bidding software that is handled by our computer software. Selections are awarded and computers notify flight crews....
