Within this essay I am going to make a plan focused on my experience when working with people with mental health problems. I will discuss the social issues related to this form three sociology perceptive, which will be functionalist, Marxist and interactionism. I will then focus on how old left perspective, new right perspective and third way have influenced people with mental health problems and how this has affected the society .I decided to focus on this specific social issue people because there is increasing discrimination against mental health patients. “Most commonly reported areas were discrimination against by friends and family (59%), a fear of being discriminated against (46%), and discrimination in looking for employment (34%) and mental health services(34%)”(ANASTAS Jeane W . KUERBIS Alexis N. January 2009, p81).WHO recommends that countries set up many social bodies to ensure that human rights are being respected in all mental health facilities. This discrimination that is experienced by people with mental health problems can be intensified if that person happens to be from black minority ethnic community. At times people with mental health problems can be in such in such a vulnerable state that they may even require admissions to hospital against their wishes. Service user said “coming to mental health services was like the last straw...they strip of your dignity ...you become to dregs of society” (Keating, 2002, p18). In addition people with mental health problems issues face problems of unemployment due to discrimination in the workplace and of the benefit system because they are often wrongly denied employment benefits and excluded form life insurance cover. Furthermore, it is vital for social workers to understand and make use of strategies to challenge discrimination which is relevant to social work value F. (NOS).
