“Society not only determines what we do, but also what we are”. In other words, Berger in his article details just how social locations involves our being as well as our conduct by three basic ideas: the Role Theory, the Sociology of Knowledge, and the Reference Group Theory.
In Role Theory, Roles are the links which enable us to extend group of definitions of the situation. Role is a typified response to a typified expectation. Roles do more than simply regulate behavior, but also give us with how to feel and think, therefore roles are complete sets. People become their roles; roles have our social identities attached. Role Theory considers most of everyday action to be living up to the roles, or opportunity of others. It postulate some propositions about social behavior like a lot of persons spend most of their lives in groups of people with these groups, the persons often take separate locations, each of this locations is what we call a role, whit a whole set of meanings that are expected from others. Through it we can see the identity is socially Bestowed, Sustained, and Transformed, this is the significance of role theory. Roles carry with certain actions and the emotions and attitudes.
Bestowed is a process by which a child learns to be a contributor member of the society. Self and society, in the child’s experience, are the two sides of the same currency. Self is a development of discovery of society. The child learns how to play roles by taking the role of others. This learning occurs in interaction with other human beings. Therefore, identity is not a given, but is bestowed in acts of social recognition. Human children are so exact that they only take the benefit of what the human environment afford in a manner not achievable by other animal species.
