What Is Sociology
Sociology is the scientific study of social interaction and social organization. Sociologists observe the patterns and processes of human social relations. Patterns and processes refer to human behaviors like decisions and reactions that can be expected to happen.
Sociology can answer and explain some of the questions that arise from today’s society like, “Why do people commit crimes”. First, you have to understand that a sociologist defines crime as “acts of force or fraud undertaken in pursuit of self-interest” (Stark, p176). How people act depends on how the surrounding people want them to act. If someone associates with others who approve of deviance and crime, the more that person will commit. Another reason for crime is that the rewards outweigh the consequences, especially for someone that has nothing. If you have nothing to lose, you might as well give it a try. One final reason is that some people are just born criminals. They are less evolved humans that lack judgment.
Gender inequality is the amount of power a gender has as compared to the other. Sex ratio is one of the first reasons for gender inequality. A sex ratio is expressed in the number of males per 100 females. One more thing that makes gender inequality continue is stereotypes. Some common stereotypes include women having the housewife status, and men being the workers. Common stereotypes are enforced by the media and also in everyday conversation. As long as people believe in these stereotypes, gender inequalities will continue.
