Social Services Reflection
1. The tasks completed during my BSW senior year field placement with the Department of Social Services varied. Conducting home visits with my supervisor while observing client behaviors in the foster home was a task I completed frequently. During these visits, my supervisor introduced me to clients and displayed how to properly conduct client in home assessment forms. These assessment forms would contain information pertaining to the client’s living conditions in their foster homes and would document the physical and psychological needs of the client to help them improve independent living skills; better preparing them for transition out of care. Also, I was allowed the opportunity to attend a school meeting discussing a client’s 504 behavioral plan. During this activity, it was discussed why the client was placed in the alternative school rather than being placed in regular school. After the meeting, the team concluded that the client was misplaced and that the client would developmentally progress within the school’s environment. This activity allowed me to see the importance of advocating for clients. This client’s worker did not accept the client being placed in alternative school and therefore did everything in her power to be placed back in regular school where the client best fit. Lastly, while interning at the Department of Social Services, I spent time updating Child Tracking Forms and Psychological Evaluation Reference lists; contacting different organizations exploring the services they provide clients who have experienced trauma. Completing this activity help me improve my ability to find local resources that will assist with advocating for clients. The activities completed while interning at the Department of Social Service has better prepared me for working with diverse populations within the community.

    It is not said that these social services are bad or anything unethical but it is bad when these kids spend long time on these social services and not getting any kind of education or schooling. If they give one or less hour in one day in these things they can of course learn many things from it but their first and foremost thing would absolutely always be studying and getting education on the first priority.     Reflective practice is something we all carry out every single day, probably without even realising it. We use reflection in many different situations and under many different circumstances, as a way of improving our own skills and abilities for different things, as individuals. Cowan proposed that learners are reflecting in an educational way, “When they analyse or evaluate one or more personal experiences, and attempt to generalise from that thinking” (1999: 18). Reflective practice allows us to look at something we have carried out and allows us to see whether or not we handled the situation properly or whether we would handle it differently if we were giving the opportunity to do it again. By doing this reflecting enables you to see how you have improved in certain areas and pinpoint areas which may need some improvement. It’s basically a way of seeing what you have learnt and perhaps shedding light on what could be done in the future.     My duties were to medicate, feed, and assess them for any complication condition because most of them were completely dependent upon other for total care. There were some of these people that were abused either by their parents or by legal guardians.     In my internship, I didn’t have a lot of client interaction, and hands-on experience. If I were to rate my experience, I would say 5 out 10. Dr. Lowe promoted us to attend social work workshops and seminars to expose us to different aspects of working within the community.     I choose to shadow and interview Jean Rizzolo, Lead Social Caseworker, at the Department of Human Services in the Division of Child Welfare Service. I have a huge interest in working with children and this seemed like a great fit for me. During the interview Mrs. Rizzolo informed me that she received her Bachelor Degree at Metro State University with a Major in Criminal Justice and a Minor is Psychology. She attended the University of Colorado Denver for her Masters in Counseling. She was drawn to social work because she always liked helping people and knew that it would be rewarding for her to pursue a career in social work. Mrs. Rizzolo volunteered her time for many years in group homes and with the developmentally disabled, along with time volunteering at the Denver Victim Center. She spent almost two years working at a drug and alcohol clinic for in-patient and out-patient’s processing paperwork and giving UA’s. After she received her Bachelor Degree in Criminal Justice she took a job with the Denver District Divorce Courts but knew that she wanted to do more than just work an office job, which is why she continued her education towards a Master’s Degree in Counseling and was soon after hired on to work with Arapahoe County. She was with Arapahoe County for over five years before leaving to go work for Jefferson County where she has been for over 15 years now. In May of 2012 Jean Rizzolo received a pin in honor of her 20 years of service in Social Work in the State of Colorado. She received this pin from the City of Denver’s Mayor Hancock, who treated her to lunch along with her entire team.…
