Identifying the issues facing by the SME’s:
The small and medium scale industry occupies an important position in any country’s economy and continues to contribute to industrial development, exports and forex earning, creation of employment opportunities etc. This segment is developing in India, parallel with large scale and MNC corporations. A continuous growth and development of companies in this segment ensures a balanced growth of the economy and acts as a facilitator towards entrepreneurial development, business ownership and related wealth creation, employment generation etc.
The post-liberalisation business environment has become harsh for the small and medium scale industries sector because of increased internal and external competition. In addition, the far-reaching impact of the various WTO norms are now threatening to further affect the fortunes of small and medium enterprises. Unfortunately, despite sufficient notice and the growing awareness of the impending threats, the small and medium scale sector does not appear to be adequately prepared for the new challenges.
Though the sector has grown at a rapid pace post-Independence, the incidence of sickness is on the rise. While the official figures show only about 10 per cent of the over 32 lakh SSI units as sick, the unofficial figures put this figure at over 40 per cent.
While there is a crucial contribution of this sector in terms industrial output, exports and industrial employment to the GDP these small entrepreneurs need modernization, technology upgradation and infrastructural support to pull up their socks to fight with increasing competition both with a country and globally.
