Reportaje “Estampas del Valle”
Abstract: “Estampas del Valle”, or “Sketches of the Valley”, is a book written by a well-known Chicano author, Rolando Hinojosa-Smith. The book is divided into four sections, in which he writes about the “sketches” of the characters he establishes, things that happen such as a sudden murder, the lives and deaths of elders in the community, and of the life of Rafa Buenrostro. Belken County a fictitious location in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas. He writes of many that live there, ranging from young children, to prostitutes, to priests, ect. He writes of the dialogues, the stories, and the occurrences that are common regardless of ethnicity, with a humoristic view. His masterpiece is written in first person narrator and omniscient author consisting of letters, pieces from journals, diaries, and recollections of conversations.
Rolando Hinojosa-Smith nació el 21 de enero del año 1929, en Mercedes, Tejas. Su padre un México americano, Manuel Guzmán Hinojosa y su madre Carrie Effie Smith, una blanca. Hinojosa nació el menor de dos hermanas y un hermano. A la edad de quince años, el comenzó publicando su primeras obras en inglés, en la publicación Creative Bits. Después de graduarse de la escuela secundaria en el año 1946 a la edad de diez y siete años, se alisto en el ejército donde cumplió dos años. Hinojosa luego atendió la Universidad de Tejas en Austin, por un corto tiempo antes de su reactivación en 1950 al ejército para ir a la guerra de Corea. El estuvo estacionado en Fort Eustis, Virginia, donde fue director de una publicación del campo. Luego cuando fue estacionado en el Caribe trabajó como anunciador de radió y fue director de la publicación Caribbean
