Six Sigma

Six Sigma is a highly disciplined approach to decision making that helps people focus on improving processes to make them as near perfect as possible. The central idea behind Six Sigma is that if you can measure how many defects you have in a process, you can systematically figure out how to eliminate them and get as close to zero defects as possible. It is thus considered a quality improvement procedure.
Six Sigma implements a “martial arts” ranking terminology that defines a hierarchy which identifies the various key roles that are to be played in order to successfully execute Six Sigma. Some of those roles and terms include Master Black Belt, Black Belt and Green Belt. Master Black Belts focus on identifying projects for Six Sigma, whereas Black and Green Belts are mainly responsible for executing projects.
According to Thomas Pydzek, author of The Complete Guide to Six Sigma, “Master Black Belts are the highest level of technical and organizational proficiency” (Pydzek, n.d., para. 4). They are involved in the development of key metrics and strategic decisions using rigorous statistical procedures. They can also act as Six Sigma technologists or internal consultants. Master Black Belts also train and coach Green and Black Belts. They assist them in applying statistical methods and provide guidance whenever it is needed. Black Belts operate under Master Black Belts to lead problem-solving projects. They are primarily concerned with project execution. They also tend to train and guide lower project teams. Green Belts support Black Belt projects by assisting with data collection and analysis.
