Sierra Leone is a small country in western Africa, yet it has some big problems. The UN has ranked Sierra Leone as the world's “least livable” country, based on its poverty and the poor quality of life. Its rich history dating all the way back to the first tribal settlers around 500 BC, to its most recent presidential election without the help of the UN peacekeeping force, is filled with war, violence, money, and recently diamonds.
It all started with the first tribe called the Bulom tribe, then later in the 15th century, there was another group of tribes called the Mende and the Temne tribes. Sierra Leone has very thick rainforests that made it difficult for major African empires to erupt and for exploration of western peoples. It remained populated with small tribal villages until the British settled the first major colony in 1787. Freetown, also called the “Province of Freedom”, served as a home for blacks that were discharged from the British armed forces, as well as rescued slaves. It also served as the headquarters of all the British West African Territories. Sierra Leone was the only African country with a European-style university. In...
