Should Women Be Allowed In Combat Essay
“[Girls] have hips for giving birth, not running like males do” (debate.org). This was an actual quote from someone who voted no on an online public poll on whether or not women should be allowed in combat. For years people of all types have said that women should not be allowed into combat for many reasons. However, the branches of the armed forces are starting to equalize PT standards and accepting women in more jobs that were once men-only positions. Women should be allowed in infantry because the stereotype of men being superior to women is outdated in today’s society, and ladies can bring just as much to the table as men can in a time of war. The idea that women should not go into combat is slowly being changed. In an article from The San Diego Union Tribune author Gretel Kovach states that Marine Corps are planning to open ground combat jobs to women for there might be some benefits (Kovach). The Marine Corps are one of the toughest American military branches and …show more content…
In an article titled “The Problems of Women in Combat - From a Female Combat Vet” Jude Eden states “And until women stop menstruating, there will always be an uphill battle for staying level and strong at all times” (Eden). However, what Eden refuses to state in her article is that there are many birth control options that weaken symptoms or even completely rid of a menstrual cycle. Also with the stress a woman might be going through in infantry it usually weakens a cycle on its own.
Stereotypes between men and women are really starting to change. Especially with the idea that women can be just as tough as men. Allowing them into combat positions could bring many benefits and more people are starting to see that. Women have come a long way in today’s military culture and allowing women in infantry positions brings us one step closer to gender equality throughout the armed

Women should be able to fight in battle. I mean why shouldn’t they? Men fight in battle, why can’t women fight? Women could be just as strong and as fast as a man in battle. There are some women today and throughout history that have gone to the battlefield in secret.…

There have been exceptions to the tradition of keeping women out of combat roles which have been mostly out of necessity. World War II saw a very large need for additional people to be placed under arms. Japan and Russia utilized women to supplement ground combat troops after horrendous losses took a toll on their fielded armies. The U.S. saw it fit to utilize women as ferry pilots flying military aircraft from factories to forward operating locations where they would be taken over by men (Myre, 2013). The U.S. Military put women to work in various forms of defense industry during the war years regressing back to old ways after the Axis powers were vanquished. It’s been proven over the course of the 20th Century that BFOQ in the military by only allowing men into direct combat roles is an antiquated practice. The historic evidence of continued performance of women in these roles proves BFOQ in the military does not…

But why you ask? Here are just a few things people might say to argue against women being able to cooperate in combat duties. Opposing side: There's always the risk of a woman getting pregnant. They've had woman getting pregnant right before deployment or finding out during their deployment and have to get shipped back immediately. Me: Yeah, if a woman was serious about her job, she would take better precautions before going out. If anyone does get pregnant, neither the man nor the woman is ready for the job then. Opposing side: They don't have the strength. What if they were going out into battle and one of their men collapsed, and couldn't get up on his own. Not only would they be able to pick them up, there's like 30 more pounds of equipment on them. Me: They don't let women with no strength out into combat. They get training, a lot of training, and only the strong, smart, fast women get sent…

“… When young women wonder how high they can rise in our military, they can look at General Ann Dunwoody and her four hard earned stars. They can see that it's real. When they ask what kind of jobs they can do, they can look to women like all of you who've played just about every kind of role imaginable. And when they ask whether they can cut it -- whether they have what it takes to succeed -- all they have to do is to look at your lives, to look into your lives and to look at the careers that you've developed that inspire us all," the US First Lady Michelle Obama stated addressing women in combat (Moving History Forward). I greatly agree to her statement because women have not been given combat roles in the military. Women have served in the United States army but in the roles not given to men. I highly support the lifting of the ban on women in military. President Barrack Obama has oversaw the lifting of the ban to ensure more women serve in the military. Women are fit enough to serve in combat roles that are demanding and of specialty. I will address the reasons why women…

Speaking from a woman who is in the military I’m going to elaborate on why I think that women shouldn’t serve in combat positions. It’s scientifically proven that women doesn’t physically perform at the same level as men. For an example, the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) is broken down into two categories’, women and men and in which they have different age groups in which women are held to a lower standards than men. The APFT have different requirements when you turn a certain age meaning your body can’t handle as much as it did when you were younger. Same thing with women and men you can’t hold them to the same standard when their body is constructed differently. Physically a woman skeletal system is less dense and prone to have more breakages than a man. Psychological concerns are that women would be place on the front line and then get pregnant to escape from combat. Another reason I think women shouldn’t go into some combat positions such as sniper school is because you have to be aware that they camp out for days, but a woman can’t do that especially if they are on their menstrual cycle. We as women have to realize is that we can’t do everything as men.…

For decades, gender roles played a major criteria in the occupation of a certain person based on their “actual or perceived sex”. These gender roles sparked a recent controversy on whether women must be allowed to serve in combat on par with men. So, should women be allowed to serve in the military as equals to men? No, since the dawn of time, women fought for equality and justice, but usually failed to perceive the harsh reality that women are just biologically weaker than men. Training will be twice as hard for women. Even though a few women are on par with men, they deal with other issues such as pregnancies and menstruation, while other countries do not care about diversity in the military, and they are simply biologically weaker.…

Because of the ongoing war against terrorism, the question of women serving alongside ground infantry is critically relevant. Women have been in combat situations in the past but they should not serve as part of infantry units because they can’t match the physical capacities of men ((Hoge, Clark, et al, and 327-329; Murdoch, Bradley, Mather, Klein, Turner, and Yano S3-S10). Women claim they should be allowed to serve alongside ground infantry because of equality; however this is not about equality it is about women wanting special circumstances. In addition, infantry units are distinct for their fraternity like brotherhood, tight unit cohesion, and “thick skin.” This image of combat ready men may be tarnished with allowance of women to participate (Scarborough ).…

America, the land of the free and the home of the brave, this freedom includes women. Women have been serving in the United States military for decades. Being denied jobs in the certain fields solely based on gender and not their qualifications or performance. Women have proven to provide cultural benefits during combat. By not allowing women, the opportunity to have these combat jobs goes against equal opportunity and women’s rights as a whole. However now the question of whether they can or even should fight beside men in combat has come up. Many people think that because almost the whole world has recognized that each individual has all the same basic rights, regardless of their gender or race, that everyone can do the same job equally. Women Should Go to Combat

We think that women should be allowed to go to combat. My biggest reason because men and women are equal. There are so many reasons I think women are equal to men. For example the first reason is because of the 19th amendment. Because of the 19th amendment women got the right to vote. Women waited 70 years till the 19th amendment was passed. Because of this law women got the right not only to vote but also to get jobs, and their education just like how men were allowed to do. Women were tired of just being that stay at home mom only cleaning and taking care of the kids. They wanted to go out and have their freedom and go get jobs and have the same rights as men had. So they fought for it till they finally got what they wanted the 19th amendment to pass and have equal rights as men. They went on hunger strikes and went to jail for pro-testing. If they can handle hunger and the entire miss treating people did to them they can handle going to combat with men if they wanted to.…
