The Short Stories Quiet, But Aggressive Approach Novels are superfluous while short stories strive for flawlessness, ensuring meticulously picked details and succinct plots. The short story utilizes the complex and vivid words the English language has to offer, painting pictures in the minds of the reader, while the novel overwhelms the reader with redundant and arbitrarily picked language. Steven Millhauser says that Short stories illustrate the message or meaning that they want to portray to the reader in a stimulating way, guaranteeing conciseness. The reason short stories are not just called short novels is: short stories are easier to fathom as well as more interesting to read , due to their concentrated plot, their explosive language, and their hidden meanings.

“The story of an hour” in which a women realizes that life without a man, means life without restraints, explains to the reader the thoughts and feelings of women in the 19th century. “ but she saw beyond that bitter moment a long procession of years to come that would belong to her absolutely” (choppin2). This quote summarizes the epiphany that the main character had; in one sentence the reader understands the attitude toward men women felt in the 19th century. “By excluding almost everything, it can give perfect shape to what remains” (Millhauser1). Unlike a novel, this short story gets straight to the point, instead of having chapters of back story and summary. “The Devil and Tom Walker” is a short story that tells the story of a man making a deal with the devil. This is a story of a man’s life, who gave his soul of money and wealth. This story takes a lengthy life span of Tom Walker, and shrinks it into eight pages. This story has very detailed and graphic language, Millhauser says “The short story concentrates on its grain of sand, in the fierce belief that there – right there, in the palm of its hands- lies the universe”

In “The Devil and Tom Walker” there are multiple events that appear supernatural. When Tom is walking along in the woods he meets the devil or, otherwise known as, the Old Scratch, "’The upshot of all which is, that, if I mistake not,’ said Tom, sturdily, ‘you are he commonly called Old Scratch.’" (Irving). Tom is confronted by the devil for trespassing on his land. Now most people do not believe in the devil, but romanticists believe that the devil was a supernatural or gothic being. When Tom decides he is not scared of the devil, he offers Tom him a deal. He shall give his soul to the devil for eternity in exchange for all the riches he could imagine. When Tom got home he decided not to accept the deal to make his wife upset and mad. Tom told his wife that he was not going to accept the devils offer she went off and tried to make it herself. After a few days of her missing Tom decides to go and look for her. Upon finding parts of her body and confirming that she was dead he made the deal with the devil, because he didn’t have a reason to not take the deal. Tom would get the money and become a person who lends money at unreasonably high rates of interest. Tom agreed to take the devils usurer and drive people to bankruptcy. After years of service the devil came for tom, "’Tom, you're come for!’ said the black fellow, gruffly” (Irving). When the devil made Tom the deal he sold his…

As we go through history, one of the most current issues in people life is property and the obtaining of money. A clear example is the story of “The Devil and Tom Walker” based on the concept of greed and how it lead us directly to the sin. At the beginning of the story Tom and his wife are described as a miserly people, living a miserly and unhappy life, always trying to cheat each other. Actually, it is said ‘whatever the woman could lay hands on, she hid away….Her husband was continually prying about to detect her secret hoard’ (lines 20-24). This is a clear evidence that they don’t care about each other and how the greed is present in their daily life. The author builds Tom's identity based on the concept of greed and agony. This is reflected in his actions, and considering that he has nothing to lose, he is…

Published in 1894, “The Story of an Hour,” has endured longer than the title would indicate and is a declaration of the support of independence for women from its author Kate Chopin. Having read this story before in other courses, and having spoken at length about how Chopin was in support of the idea of woman’s suffrage even before the suffrage movement caught hold, this story leaves a lasting impression and resonates deeper with me every time I read it. Chopin uses her work to illuminate the joy of independence and the oppression that marriage can bring. Whether intentional or unintentional, her message is not only meant for women but, extends to men as well. It is a timeless theme that anyone can learn from in every age. By her use of various literary elements such as, structure, and style, and the use of rhetorical devises such as pathos Chopin creates a work that provokes deeper though and asks a reader to delve into the emotional struggle of her character Mrs. Louise…

The story “The Lamp at Noon” takes place in a dried up, unfertile desert. Dust storms are causing health problems for the family. The setting is crucial to create the dark and sad atmosphere of the story because it was all about the fact that there is something wrong with the place that it dried out their farm which caused them to suffer. Which also creates a mood of being dull, lonely and monotonous. The couple, Ellen and Paul, has been arguing about what they're going through. Ellen begs her husband to leave the place and stay at the city where they can get more decent clothes and food to eat. But Paul didn't want to leave because he still believes that the soil is still fine for farming, that one day the storm will stop and the sunlight will come back.…

“The Story of an Hour” and “A Jury of her Peers” are short stories based on married life for women in the 19th century. During this time period women had no rights and were expected to get married, raise children, and do household chores without doing anything for themselves. Works of literature written during this time by American women provide insight to the predicaments of married middle-class white women in the 19th century. The women discussed in these stories while alike, are very different. In “The Story of an Hour” Mrs. Mallard’s husband loved her and treated her right. Yet, she felt no happiness or freedom. Minnie Foster in “A Jury of her Peers” felt like she was silenced by her controlling and demanding husband. Authors such as Kate…
