In what ways, and with what results, did the US Cold War policy of containment affect Cuba after 1959?

The Cold War was the period of conflict, tension and competition between the USA and the USSR and their allies. It lasted from the mid 1940s until the early 1990s. Throughout the period there were no physical conflicts, however there were periods of escalation that threatened even the existence of humanity. One of the most important confrontations during the Cold War was the events that unfolded in Cuba in 1962. These events were termed the ‘Cuban Missile Crisis’ by the Americans, the ‘Caribbean Crisis’ by the Russians and the ‘October Crisis’ by the Cubans. It is regarded as the moment in which the Cold War came closest to escalating into a full scale nuclear war.

The United States of America adopted a foreign policy strategy in the early years of the Cold War as its response to the USSR and Communism. This policy was Containment and its policy was to put an end to what was called the domino effect of nations moving politically towards the Soviet Union based on Communism instead of the European/American based capitalism countries. The domino effect was a theory that if a country were surrounded by Communism it too would become a Communist state. As the USA wanted to contain Communism it believed in this theory and took steps such as the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall plan in order to prevent any further spread of Communism within Europe and ultimately the rest of the world.

The Truman Doctrine was a proclamation by the American President in 1947, Harry S.Truman and it basically stated that the USA would help out any country that might have been pressured into joining or falling under Soviet or Communist control with aid or force.
The Marshall Plan was the plan of the USA for rebuilding and creating a stronger foundation for the allied European countries. In 1947 the United States of America invested $13 Billion in aid to these countries in order...
