Sex-Tourism Its Impacts On India

Introduction

The purpose of this report is to critically discuss what socio-cultural impacts has on India, from the sex tourism perspective. It is certainly not a new industry and has been increasingly and rapidly developing within recent years. Sex Tourism is concerned with prostitution since it can be viewed as the tourists using prostitution services outside their home country. The understanding of these terms seems to be clear, but an exacts definition has been difficult to create (Opperman, 1998). The author argues if tourism causes prostitution or other factors of the destination like political, economical situation. The author will discuss all aspects of sex tourism and try to prove what impacts has this type of tourism. The paper will include four parts introduction, discussion, conclusion and references. The findings are taken from the perspective of males as the sex tourist, and the female as the sex workers.

Discussion

Sex and sexuality are powerful human-being emotions that have been exploited by the tourism industry to develop aspects of destinations image. Sex tourism is a developing phenomenon engaged in many third world countries, and developing ones (Bauer and McKercher, 2003). According to Smith and Duffy (2003) sex tourism is travel to engage in sexual intercourse or sexual activity with prostitutes, and is typically undertaken internationally by tourists from wealthier countries. The World Tourism Organization, defines sex tourism as “trips organized from within the tourism sector, or from outside this sector but using its structures and networks, with the primary purpose of effecting a commercial sexual relationship by the tourist with residents at the destination”. According to statement above, author may presume that it is not always the tourists who are traveling to the prostitutes; sometimes it is the prostitute who is the tourist serving locals; or some times both are foreigners to the actual place where the sexual encounter takes...
