Sex education in public schools has been a controversial issue in the United States for a very long time. With the HIV and teen pregnancy crises growing, a better sex education class is certainly needed.
Some people believe that sex education should be taught at home by the children's parents. They feel that sex education programs in schools do not put an emphasis on abstinence and encourage children to have sexual intercourse.
American culture is very sexually based. Sex can be seen all over the media. Charles Krauthammer stated, "Sex oozes from every pore of the culture and there's not a kid in the world who can avoid it (Bender).”
After being faced with sex on a daily basis, the independent teens of today will make their own decisions on whether or not to have sex. The important thing is to make sure that they know all aspects of it. The course should be mandatory lasting nine weeks. It needs to be taught outside of the health class. The course will provide sexual health information and skills on decision making.
The United States has the highest teen pregnancy rate among the most developed countries in the world. American teenagers are bombarded with confusing and conflicting messages about sex. They need access to real, unbiased information about abstinence, contraception, and healthy relationships (Sex). The vast majority of Americans, including parents, support sex education, but only about five percent of American students receive sex education that covers all the dimensions of sexuality. Instead, many teens are taught a strict abstinence-only program, which does not teach contraception and denies them potentially lifesaving information (Sex). In this course the teacher will cover all aspects of how to have safe sex and not just abstinence. It will teach every possible way to have the safest sex.
