Kambei: He is introduced as a brave Samurai that is not afraid to shave his head. He is brave, experienced, wise, confident, humble, all the good qualities of a warrior. We are shown this by when he shaves his head, tells Katsuschiro how he lost all of his battles, knows who is strong by just looking at them, knows about all the strategies to fight the bandits, and he is not rash so he never gets angry and expresses his emotions.
Gorobei: He is introduced as the second person to except fighting the bandits for free. He is like Kambei. He is serious when he has to be, and is also laughable and easygoing. He is always smiling, even if he knows that the bandits are going to come. He becomes Kambei¡¯s deputy because he is smart and knowledgeable. He helps Kambei with planning for the upcoming battle with the bandits.
Shichiroji: He is introduced as Kambei¡¯s old friend. He is brave and is very experienced in battle. The conversation with Kambei in the beginning reveals that Shichiroji is very skilled and has survived many battles. He is not as smart or wise as Kambei because he is not 2nd in command.
Heihachi: He is introduced as a ¡°hungry¡± samurai that is cutting wood for someone for food. He doesn¡¯t seem to be a strong warrior, but he admits that he is not strong by joking that he is from the woodcutter school.
Kyuzo: He is introduced as a very skilled swordsman as he fights another samurai in a dual which Kyuzo wins easily. He is skillful, and kind. He doesn¡¯t show off his skills. When he goes to the bandits¡¯ hideout and came back killing two more bandits and obtaining a gun, he did not brag about his success. He also doesn¡¯t talk a lot, but asks how the villagers are doing and comforts them during the night after the first bandit attack.
Katsuschiro: He is introduced as an admirer of Kambei, who wants to become Kambei¡¯s student. He is a lover. He falls in love with Shino and has an affair with her. He...
