Overview of the SDLC
In response to Riordan’s need for a more innovative human resources management system, this project plan has been created to assist Riordan’s development team throughout the SDLC (systems development life cycle). Successful development of this system depends on the structure, clarity, and organization set forth in developing the system. Although many variations of the SDLC are in practice today, John Satzinger (2004) suggests that each development cycle should include the following important phases:
I. Project planning
II. Analysis
III. Design
IV. Implementation
V. Support
Adherence to the details of these phases will help ensure that important planning steps are closely considered, and will help prevent costly changes to the system once it has been installed. During all phases of the SDLC, the output of each stage becomes the input for the following stage (Russel, 2002). All steps of the SDLC are vital to the outcome of the project, and will help make certain that the new information system provides users with the tools necessary for successfully managing human resources at Riordan.
Planning Phase
The purpose of the planning phase is to recognize clearly and define the existing problems, and to determine what type of solution is hoped for. As the current HR system is clearly not meeting Riordan’s needs, this phase is necessary because it investigates the inadequacies and existing problems that must be addressed. The scope and feasibility of the project for Riordan should also be addressed, in efforts to determine the reality of the goals and timeline set forth. When examining the scope of this project, Riordan’s analysts should assess the work that will be involved in developing a new system, and consider any problems that may arise during the project.
