Sci 241 Final Project
Throughout the course of the last nine weeks, my eyes have been opened to an entirely new world full of nutritional and exercising information. It is rough being a thirty-three year old husband and father, with an eye on trying to remain on this planet for as long as humanly possible. As parents, we all have goals we want to achieve. The usual suspects include seeing your children graduate high school and then college, walking your daughter down the aisle of her wedding, and being able to retire and continue to live a healthy and happy life. What I have come to realize through this nutritional and exercising information is that in order to accomplish this goal, there are certain aspects of my life that I need to change. I am not a particularly healthy eater. I do not exercise regularly. I mostly do what I can with the time I have available. I suspect this problem plagues many men across this country and around the world. In my state, the obesity rate is close to 30% and it continues to trend upward (Centers for Disease Control, 2011). Without a drastic change in lifestyle, I am simply adding to the statistics. The knowledge I have gained in this course has led me to believe that this is simply unacceptable. Something has to change, and I have a plan to make that happen.

My life is an unusual one. My work schedule has me getting up before the sun rises and getting home before lunch time. After I get home, my time is mostly occupied by my two year old daughter. Then, I cook dinner and usually go to bed before the sun sets. Because of the nature of this lifestyle, there is not much time for things like exercise or any other physical activity. Do not get me wrong. I do participate in some mild physical activity associated with chasing my daughter around outside on a nice day or inside when the weather does not cooperate, but I would hardly call that exercise. On top of that, because of my daily routine, I do not have time to really concentrate on what I am

    During the past 20 years, there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States and rates remain high. Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, some of the leading causes of preventable death. James O. Hill, PhD, director of the Center for Human Nutrition at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, agrees. He attests that at the rate we're going, obesity-related diabetes alone "will break the bank of our healthcare system." The CDC reports that in the United States, more than one-third of U.S. adults (35.7%) and approximately 17% (or 12.5 million) of children and adolescents aged 2—19 years are obese. Clearly this is an epidemic that proves to be harder to stop than one would think. Most unhealthy behaviors are easier to remedy than others. We know that smoking causes cancer, and therefore, the easiest way to avert that cancer is to not smoke. However, we cannot simply stop eating. People rely more and more on processed foods and fast food in their day-to-day life, or they are not eating as much processed food, but are maybe eating the wrong foods.     At 6 '0" and approximately 210 lbs with a BMI (body mass index) of 28 I am considered overweight and very close to being obese according to the website weight-loss.emedtv.com. I am positive that my current and very poor fitness and nutritional habits are the main cause of my depleting health status as well as my current overweight status. Asking me to explain my current fitness and nutritional habits is basically superfluous. My current fitness habit includes nothing more than the occasional golf or bowling outing, and it does not happen more than once every 2-3 months. My current nutritional habits are just as bad if not worse. Typically I only eat once or twice a day and normally they are very large portions of generally unhealthy foods. For example this past Thursday I managed to eat two medium pizzas from Pizza Hut in one sitting and on Saturday I ate two foot long sandwiches from Subway within about 40 minutes. My fitness and nutritional habits have been the same for years and I know that they are the reason that I am so close to being considered obese. There are a number of health risks associated with obesity. According to WebMD.com "Obesity is not just a cosmetic problem, it 's a health hazard. Someone who is 40% overweight is twice as likely to die prematurely as is an average-weight person. This is because obesity has been linked to several serious medical conditions". Some of the health risks that are associated with obesity include: Heart disease and stroke, High blood pressure, Diabetes, Cancer, Gallbladder disease and gallstones, Osteoarthritis, and Breathing problems, such as asthma.     Because food and weight loss issues come from a psychological place I knew that I did not have the tools to help my clients dig deeper into their own issues. My limited experience frustrated me and I realized that I was at a crossroads in my life. The answer was out there I just needed to access it.     Many people do not think about the long-term health implications of their lifestyle choices. Most of us seem to think “it won’t happen to me” when it comes to chronic diseases. Since we all know that we can safely eat a candy or even as many as thousands of candies or lay on the couch watching television day after day without seeing any immediate harmful effects, it can be difficult to imagine that we are slowly developing chronic diseases over time. This concept of developing diseases over time from the specific lifestyle choices that each of us makes, is known as chronic diseases of lifestyle (CDL).
