Within the United States a heated debate that dances the fine line between the separation of church and state rages over the controversy of same-sex marriage. Homosexuals come under fire for their attempts to build a family around their own sexual preferences and the unions and bonds formed within them. In fact, some that oppose the marriage of same-sex couples say that the entire institution of marriage and family would collapse if people of the same gender were allowed to marry and have families of their own. However, they argue these points with only their own opinions built from society and that of the church. No actual proof exists that allowing homosexuals to marry and raise children would, in fact, taint the sacredness of the family lifestyle. So why is it, in a land where choice of religion is free and not to be persecuted under the Bill of Rights, the American government clings to the Biblical idea that marriage is only to be between a man and a woman?
Many question why homosexuals need to seek the right to marry. Could they not be happy with just being with one another? The answer to this is spawned from another, simpler question; why do any couples want to marry? The most common and ideal reply would be out of love; people marry, for the most part, because of the love that they feel for one another. In some cases it’s only for the convenience, but this reason usually ends in a separation. Most heterosexual couples do not begin families and live together without being married, as being married allows them certain rights if something were to happen to their spouse. Even if a will is in place to aid homosexual couples with legalities, families can and have successfully taken the matter to court to gain control of the deceased’s estate. To a hospital a life partner is nothing more than a stranger off the street and has no say in the case of medical emergencies and decisions; the fact, is that there is no institution in place to help...
