Rwandan Genocide
The Rwandan Genocide occurred from April 6 through mid- July 1994 .Rwanda is one of the smallest countries in Africa, which has a population of 7 million people. It is comprised of two main ethnic groups which are the Hutu and the Tutsis. The Hutus accounted for more then 90 percent of the population. Back when Belgians had colonial rule the Tutsis were considered the best, but in 1962, the Hutu seized powers and reversed the roles.
On April 6, 1994 the Rwandan president Habyanmana a Hutu and the Burundian president Cyprien Ntarymiran, were killed when there pane was shot down near the kilgali airport. Hutu extremists were suspects in the killing because the president was going to put into plan the Arusha peace Accord, a program that helped keep peace and share powers. After this violence erupted in Rwanda and the killings started this night.
Rwanda Armed Forces and the Hutu militia set up roadblocks and they went from house to house killing Tutsis and the moderate Hutu politicians. The Tutsis were separated from the Hutus and hacked to death with machetes and clubs roadside. They even killed the prime Minster Agathe Uwilingiyimana. He was guarded by Belgian soldiers, whom were arrested, disarmed, tortured, and murdered, which prompted Belgium to withdraw the rest of the troops stationed in Rwanda.
This genocide occurred because the Hutus wanted to be separated from the Tutsis as soon as possible. The genocide was actually supposed to occur on February 26.
