Roles of the President

Following is a schedule showing how a modern President may spend a “typical” day. Each activity on the schedule requires the President to play one or more of the roles of the President. For each activity, tell which specific role is involved (e.g., commander-in-chief or chief executive). Some activities involve more than one role, so be sure to list ALL of them!

6:30 AM: Awakened by a staff member, the President listens to a brief report on events that occurred during the night.

7:30 AM: Meets with Congressional leaders for breakfast and discusses a major tax bill.

8:00 AM: Meets with the National Security Advisor, who explains the latest intelligence reports on troop strength in Afghanistan.

9:00 AM: Meets with staff member to review important bills to be considered in the House and Senate.

Role(s): Legislative leader

10:00 AM: Meets with a group of award-winning students in the Rose Garden.

10:30 AM: Meets with the Secretaries of State and Defense to discuss strategy for an upcoming conference with European heads of state.

Role(s): Head of State, Foreign policy leader

11:30 AM: Meets with political leaders to discuss plans for an upcoming campaign tour

Role(s): Political party leader

12:00 PM: Writes a message stating various reasons for vetoing a bill.

Role(s): Legislative Leader

1:00 PM: Meets with the Vice President over lunch and discusses plans for attending the funeral of a foreign leader.

Role(s): Foreign policy leader, Head of State

2:15 PM: Meets with Attorney General to consider several possible appointments to the post of FBI Director.

Role(s): Chief of the Executive Branch

3:00 PM: Signs several bills and responds to letters from party leaders.

Role(s): Legislative Leader, Political party Leader

4:00 PM: Meets with Japanese business leaders to discuss U.S. trade relations.

Role(s): Foreign Policy Leader, Head of State

5:00 PM: Meets with Joint Chiefs of Staff to review military situation in the Middle East.

Role(s): Commander and Chief of the Armed Forces

6:00 PM: Dines with a group of people who may contribute large sums to the President’s political party.

Role(s): Political Party Leader

7:30 PM: Throws out the first pitch at Chattahoochee’s baseball game against Milton.

Answer the following questions. Think about the number of roles that the President is expected to carry out on a “typical” day.

Which job of the President do you believe to be the most important? Why?
I think the most important job of the President is the legislative leader because it affects the citizens of the US the most. He is deciding whether or not to make certain bills laws and I think that it has a huge impact on the people of America.

Which job of the President do you believe to be the least important? Why?
I think the least important role of the president is the Economic Leader because I think that the job could be handled by someone else as long as it had the presidents approval.

Is the job of President too big for one person? Explain.
I don't think the job of the President is too big for one person because he has a lot of people that work for him and that are able to help him do his job and complete certian tasks.
