Role In The Theatre

The Director

In the theatre a director must do a lot of important work to make sure the performances happen without any problems. First the director must decide on a play text they wish to use or devise a play from an article (for example a picture or a piece of music.) Once this has been achieved the director must then hire people to work in the theatre and support them and the actors he is going to hire. The director will hire people such as: Designers, Stage Manager, Choreographer and Light/Sound Technician. The Director must then hold auditions to find the perfect actors to play the characters in the play text they are using. The Director can audition the actors alone or with the help of other people such as the playwright as they know the requirements of the characters or the choreographer if there is going to be a lot of technically challenging dance in the play.

After this is all completed the director can hold a meeting with all the supporting members of the team to find out what they each need to know so they can do their jobs to the best of their ability. The director must then meet the entire cast together in a room for a read though of the script so all of the cast can understand the basic plot of the play and so the playwright can hear the play read aloud. The actors are allowed to take the play away with them and they can start learning their lines. The director will then meet with the cast on a regular basis to start rehearsals. At first the director will allow the actors time to get used to working with each other and get accustomed to the space they will be working in. The director may allow for the actors to improvise little scenes with their characters to see good ideas that can be adapted for how the characters would interact with each other. The director will then start blocking scenes so each of the actors knows where they need to stand in which scene.
