Malathion, will this insecticide help us or hurt our community?
First, I will define key terms for my argument, and then I will provide some background of the situation. Next I will outline the important positions of the argument and explain why I support one of these positions. Lastly, I will consider opposing positions and discuss why these positions are outdated. I will conclude with my desision and possible directions for future research.
The key terms for this argument are as follows; we have a large population, we depend on summer tourism, we have a river, several wetlands, theses help us from spring flooding, the wetlands provide several species of birds and fish that are among many environmental elements. We also have the breeding ground for mosquitoes that may carry the West Nile Virus. We also need to determine if the insecticide is harmful to all of the above.
The situation that we have at hand is; we have had the West Nile Virus in our town. We have a huge breeding ground for them. We need to protect our selves as we do our community. This is a serious situation we have at hand.
The important positions of this argument are; we will not have to pay for this service from taxes or as a community. The proposed program could reduce the mosquito population by 90%, providing the same reduction in risk of WNV. This would mean that the projected number of WNV cases would drop from 50 to five, with less than a 20% chance of a fatality in each of the five cases. Their has also been documentation that states it is safe. They argue that exposure to Malathion could be completely controlled by educational programs and precautions.
