Introduction (Company Overview)
Established in 1929 by Jack Cohen, Tesco Plc is a British based international grocery and retail merchandising chain, the largest in the UK and the fourth largest in the world both in terms of market share and sales revenues. With the initial emphasis being food, Tesco has today broadened its horizons diversifying into areas such as discount clothes, consumer electronics, financial services, Music, Telecoms, and Insurance etc. Operating over 1900 stores in the UK, Tesco currently controls just over 30% of the grocery market in the UK, approximate to the combined market share of its closest rivals, Asda and Sainsbury's. The retailer, which is expected to make profits of at least £2.8bn this financial year, is growing at an enormous pace surging ahead of all competition and is set to continue dominating the UK markets in the years to come.
TESCO Current Marketing Practices
Reminiscent to any retail business, a key factor that has assisted Tesco in differentiating itself from its competitors and establishing itself as frontrunners has been the development and execution of a strong marketing strategy right from its formation. The champion retailers have shown greater energy and sharper responsiveness to volatile marketplaces and although their annual reports provides little in-depth information in terms of how they carry out marketing activities, it is possible through observation and articles from analysts to arrive at some conclusions regarding their general marketing practices.
