I have many nights that I feel that I do not get enough sleep. I go to bed at a decent hour but I seem to always wake up after I have gone to bed and been in bed for a couple of hours and it is like clockwork every night. I do the same thing. I might sleep a total of about 3-4 hours a night every night. But one situation that I call say that I will never forget when I did not get enough sleep was when was in the hospital having my son. The doctor induced my labor on a Monday morning around 8:30 AM and I remember having contractions throughout that whole day, my water did not break until about 9 AM or so the following Tuesday morning, which was
December 24, 1996. I remember the contractions getting harder and closer together and not being very comfortable in that hospital bed and not sleeping well because the nurses and the doctor kept coming in checking on me. It is hard to sleep when you are in labor and having back pain and cannot take anything. I did have an epidural, but that did not ease the pain completely and I could not rest or sleep. I had my son at 11:58 PM, December 24, 1996 after being in labor 38 and ½ hours. No during that time I could not really sleep or even after having him. I was then sent to ICU for a week after having my son because of my blood pressure being too high and therefore did not sleep because the nurses had to keep an eye on me 24 hours a day and plus having family and friends coming in to see us, it was tough. And then on top of that I had gotten a cold while I was in the hospital and could not breathe because I was so congested. But it was all worth it and I would do it again. Not having the sleep that I needed that week while in the hospital after giving birth to my son effected my mood big time. I was very ill and snappy. I remember that when my water broke and I knew it did and I

The last time I recall that I had not gotten enough sleep would have been when my middle child had to have oral surgery. I don’t really know if it was because she was going under and she hadn’t been before, if it was the fact that my little girl was going to have surgery for the first time. I tried for several hours to fall asleep, but my mind would not stay still. I finally decided to get up and try to doze off to the television, after that did not work I made some coffee and worked on my assignment. When it was time to get up my husband and my little girl I was exhausted, as if I was at work all day. I drove us to where we needed to go with no problem, but as we sat in the waiting room I dozed off for a few hours.…

It was a period of trial and error, never receiving a diagnosis of what the exact cause of this situation. It was by my son’s determination and God’s will that he was able to recover and come home after 16 days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Only a person who has walked through the darkness of hell knows the emotional turbulence of grief, anger and shock when seeing their child go through such an…

On December 5th through 7th, I spent my clinical experience in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) at Our Lady of Fatima Hospital. The PACU is a Critical Care Unit where patients go following surgery to receive specialized care. The nursing staff is skilled in identifying and managing complications in patients after they received anesthesia. The patient’s vital signs are closely observed, fluids are given, and pain is managed as the patient returns to their baseline in level of consciousness.…

I’m glad your mother is well! I can only imagine the amount of complaints or concerns a nurse will get in one shift. I understand, their job is to investigate the concern and assure the patient condition has not deteriorate. We as family must take their word and assume everything is well. However, your concerns regarding your mother’s mental stability was an important one. I would had preferred a doctor to assess her condition and assure you that she was just having side effects of the anesthesia.…

Afterward, the little clothes owned were taken and washed while the patients went back into the sitting room. They were not allowed outside because it was unnecessary. I watched and made sure no one escaped while guards secretly searched the rooms for anything dangerous.Fights were common but rarely physical and never stopped. This continued until the community came back together at dinner. Dinner was cold tea and leftovers served at six and the patients were to return to their straw beds directly afterward for lights out. If they didn’t sleep, we were to sedate them. They were expected to do simple things such as eat and sleep and the rest was up to them and not the nurses and…

The second night was the worst. I awoke around 3am feeling like I was going to cough up my stomach. I was always reluctant to press the button that alerted the nurses, but at that point I was desperate. The sickness I felt for all thanks to the mix of morphine and the remnants of half a bag of tortilla chips that rested in my stomach. Or, at least, did until I violently threw them up. That second night was just the beginning of a downward slope that would be the remaining five days in…

The day started as any other normal work day. I reported to work promptly at 7 am in my clean crisp uniform with my name tag clearly visible. I accepted my assignment from my head nurse and went to receive my report from the night nurse. As I walked into my patient’s room, I noticed that whole team, the attending, the resident, the anesthesiologist and the night nurse were all present. I made my way into the room, greeted everyone with a good morning and introduced myself to my patient. I received report from the nurse and thought to myself, ok this seems like a straight L&D case. The patient, F.D. was a 33 year old female G 5 P4004 at 39 weeks in labor. She came into the hospital at 4 am complaining of contractions and that her water bag had broken. She was admitted at 4:30am at 5 centimeters and now at 7 am she was 8 centimeters. She seemed to be progressing well and laboring all on her own. The team leaves the room and the attending states that rounds will be in 10 minutes. I continue to do my work, assess the patient, evaluate the fetal heart rate, read the H&P and nurse’s notes and write my receiving note. Before going to rounds, I prepare my room for delivery because as a competent nurse I anticipate that F.D. will deliver in about 1-2 hours based on her…

There was the look of concern that smeared all of their faces. Nurses rotated in and out of the room as if their feet were connected to a rotating timing belt. Dr. Fitzpatrick discussed my treatment plan with me and mother. I nodded my head in compliance to try to appear well as I could have given the circumstances. This has to the worst nightmare ever I thought. The pain medication and the two surgeries made my body exhausted. When I woke up the room has transformed into a garden filled with beautiful arrangements, balloons, and cards with words of encouragement and hope. As beautiful as this scene is I have just woken up to the reality of my…
