Repentance

Abstract

Christians and sinners alike may recognize Jesus as the Savior, who died for the sins of this world. The misunderstanding is that those who profess him as Savior may not acknowledge him as Lord. Sinners may understand there need for salvation and some may even acknowledge it takes accepting Jesus as there personal Savior. The ability to make him Lord is as equally misunderstood by sinners and some professing Christians. God has clearly outlined the prerequisites in the Bible to attain eternal life. Repentance is the necessary requirement involved in receiving a true conversion experience from God.

Faith and Repentance: The Requirements for True Repentance

God says, “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that comes to God must believe that he is, and he rewards them that diligently seek him” (Heb. 11: 6). We must believe that God is creator of the universe and He alone metes out salvation. Much of what is called salvation or the conversion experience in our time is not what Jesus or the Apostles proclaimed or taught. Simply acknowledging the Lord Jesus Christ is not enough to save us from eternal damnation, nor grant us eternal life. Merely placing our name on the church roll to say we have membership is just not enough for God to grant us access into eternity. We must have a change of mind, along with a change of heart towards God. In able for us to acquire the gift of salvation we must first realize that Jesus is God. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made” (Jhn 1”1, 3). Grudem states, “Anyone who comes to Christ for salvation must have at least a basic understanding of who Christ is and how he meets our needs for salvation” (p. 694).
