The Renaissance
Would it not be nice if we could go back in time to experience the Renaissance for ourselves? Being able to walk down the streets of Florence, Italy and experience this time period that not only gave rebirth to old values and artistic ways of statement, but also were showed a remarkable breakthrough in the thought of humans focusing on themselves. The term renaissance, means “rebirth.” Renaissance is the period of European history that saw a new interest in the arts. The Renaissance began in 14th-century Italy and spread to the rest of Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries. In this period, the uneven feudal society of the Middle Ages, was transformed into a society increasingly dominated by central political institutions, with an urban, commercial economy and lay aid of education, the arts, and music. Modern scholars have proved that the Middle Ages were nothing close to being dark and dormant. The thousand years previous to the Renaissance were filled with achievements. Because of the writing rooms of medieval monasteries, Latin writers, for example like Virgil, Ovid, Cicero, and Seneca, were preserved. The legal system of modern continental Europe had its origin in the development of civil and canon law in the 12th and 13th centuries. The Renaissance was a period of great individualism based on old traditional values. There were many factors leading to the Renaissance. First was the development of Scholasticism. This was an attempt to combine Christian beliefs with non-Christian beliefs. The Crusades trying to recapture Jerusalem was another factor leading to the beginning of the Renaissance. The Crusades brought back lost works from the Roman Empire and opened trade with the Middle East. The Crusades led to an increase in trade caused abundance in wealth that resulted in the focusing of the arts. Major advances in literature, paintings, sculptures occurred during this period.
