Race
Race is defined as a category of people whose perceived physical markers are deemed socially significant. An ethnic group is composed of people whose perceived cultural markers are deemed socially significant. In other words, Race is determined by people’s skin color and looks; while someone’s language, customs, values, ancestors, and language determine their ethnic groups.
The student bodies in most colleges are already becoming more and more diverse. However, It will clearly cost a great deal of money to make Georgia State University more ethnically diverse. Even as of now, all colleges have a long way to go in making their faculty racially and ethnically diverse. However, the short term costs of making the university more racially and ethnically diverse will have a huge positive impact on the nation. If colleges educate more minority students, poverty and labor shortages would be reduced in the future job market. For example, a study shows that if we increased the education of African Americans and Hispanics to the same level as white Caucasians, we would add 231 billion dollars to the United States economy.
Another benefit of making colleges and universities more diverse is the communication skills students learn by interacting with people from different races. The future of all college students lies within the job market and the job market is very ethnically and racially diverse. So making students interact with different races in their colleges will prepare them for their futures. If students don’t understand other people and their cultures, it might prevent them from getting along with their co-workers or possibly to not even get hired.
Making colleges more diverse will also positively enhance the future productivity of the United States workforce. Having more diversity among the students will make them more comfortable with other races in their future jobs.
