This November, there will be an income tax reduction proposal. This proposal will eliminate the state income tax, cutting the state’s income by 40%. That’s nearly costing Massachusetts to lose 12 billion dollars in its budge. Think about it, how would local communities get money if the state lost nearly 40 percent of its budget? Many local services such as education, public safety, and infrastructure will be at risk of serious consequences. To make up for state’s lost of money, property taxes may increase. This proposal will do more harm than good. I urge everyone here to vote, no on question one.
Education cuts will cause heavy damage within the school system. School teachers will get laid off leading to larger class sides. This will cause students to lose the extra help that they may need. Also, after school programs like sports, after school clubs, and arts programs will be cut to save money. These programs help keep students out of trouble by giving them something to do after school than just being home. Colleges’ intuition in Massachusetts will double. Lastly, because of the lost of state funding, schools may close down.
Another consequence that will happen is the prevention of making repairs on state roads and bridges. Pot holes in roads can cause heavy damage to your car and will cost you a lot of money to repair the damages. Remember what happen in Minneapolis, Minnesota last year when the I-35W Bridge collapsed? Well, that can happen to us if the state is unable to make repairs on bridges.
Most importantly, the public safety is at risk. If this question passes than there will be cuts in public safety. This means that police officers, fire fighters, and emergency medical personal will be laid off. These cuts will lead to longer 911 call times. So if someone is having a heart attack, they will need to get to a hospital as soon as possible! With longer 911 call times, they will have a lesser chance of surviving the heart attack.
