Qualities Of Rainsford
What do you think of when you hear about a good guy character in a movie or book? Do you see someone who is muscular, smart, brave, and kind? Most people do. One of the characters in Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game” is Rainsford, your typical good guy. Rainsford is intelligent, courageous, and physically fit.
In your mind, can you picture Superman bending bars of steel or The Hulk lifting and throwing heavy things? Most superheroes are strong. Well, so is Rainsford. One thing about him is that he hunts jaguars. After he has killed the animal he would have to carry it to his truck, and jaguars can weigh up to 300 pounds! He was on his way to hunt jaguars when he fell off the yacht he was riding. Then, he had to swim very far to get to the nearby island. “… doggedly he swam in that direction, swimming with slow, deliberate strokes, conserving his strength. For a seemingly endless time he fought the sea. He began to count his strokes; he could do possibly a hundred more.” When he got on the island, he had to survive three days in the jungle running and making traps against Zaroff, the bad guy, who hunts Rainsford. Being in good shape is not good for anything when you are scared of doing things
The thing that James Bond and Laura Croft have in common is that they both are fearless when it comes to going against the bad guys in the movies. Not only is Rainsford tough, but he is also brave like them. He didn’t have to play Zaroff’s game. He could have chose to die upfront and get it all over with. “The choice lies entirely with you. But may I not venture to suggest that you will find my idea of sport more diverting than Ivan’s?” In the beginning of the game Rainsford climbed the tree to hide from Zaroff. Rainsford knew that he had found and seen him quickly, like it was nothing. He could have lost courage and given up. Then he could have let Zaroff find him again and kill him, but he didn’t.
