Ptlls Unit 1
Unit 001: Roles, Responsibilities & Relationships in Lifelong Learning (Level 3)

This essay is to demonstrate that I understand my own roles and responsibilities in lifelong learning.
Working as a lecturer in Plumbing at Oaklands College for further education requires me to have an understanding of many legislative requirements and codes of practice. Included within these are the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974), the Children Act (2004) Every Child Matters, the Protection of Children Act (1999), Control Of Substances Hazardous to Health ( COSHH) (2002) a Duty of Care and relevant College Codes of Practice.
The Health and Safety at Work Act is probably one of the main laws to consider as this not only affects your safety but also those around you, staff and learners alike.
In my role as a Plumbing Lecturer I must make sure the classroom and especially the workshop is safe to use. This is done with the use of Risk Assessments, for example, checking that no cables or obstructions are around in classrooms and when using gas blowtorches in the workshop all relevant training for staff and pupils has been carried out.
This also comes under my Duty of Care to learners, to insure I take all reasonable steps to ensure safety. Failure to do this would be classed as negligence.
The Protection of Children Act (1999) and the Children Act (2004) were created to protect children and young adults against inappropriate behaviour by adults and other children. The Children Act (2004) encompasses the five Every Child Matters outcomes, which are, Be Healthy, Stay Safe, Enjoy and Achieve, Make a Positive Contribution and Achieve Economic Well-being.
When I first came to work at Oaklands College I had to submit to a full Criminal Records Bureau check to make sure there were no reasons to inhibit me from working with them. This does sometimes take a long time but is essential.
One part of legislation that is specific to the Plumbing Workshop is the Control Of Substances

The health and safety at work act 1974 is probably the most abided by legislation in my area of work, beauty. “This act relates to an employer but its requirements make for good working practices” (Newman; 66) this act requires that a trainer must ensure there is safe equipment in the beauty classrooms, ensure all products handled carefully and used to the manufacturers instructions. All beauty students are mare made aware of safety issues for example the fire exits and fire extinguishers. All salons should have in place a list of good housekeeping rules in which are relevant and comply with health and safety. I aslo as a trainer have a duty of care to my studants to ensure they follow health and safety guide lines. I do this by asking them to wear personal protective equiptment (PPE), enuring jewlery is removed and long hair tied back. I also carry out risk assessments throughout the course and keep the accident book up to date.…
