However, what really happened was that the initiation of intake centers that would be able to work with addicts on daily basis (in a group setting etc) until they could send them to an actual long term rehab, which still led to the problem, as Dr. Shavelson says, of "windows" of opportunity for treatment. Dr. Shavelson posits that when an addict is ready to sober up, there is often a preliminary event or window, and with the way addiction works according to the author, if they are delayed because there isn't any space for them after all their purposed efforts to get clean, some centers require potential clients to call daily “remind” not only themselves, but the clinic that they are still waiting for a bed. This process required multiple intake interviews, and for a census of people suffering from addiction who perhaps may not have access to transportation, or may be mentally ill and not on medication, who by definition are struggling with addiction) there is a likely chance that the aforementioned “window” of opportunity to get them into treatment will pass and they risk the chance of going back to using/continue using and give up on treatment altogether. Upon reading the book, one can say that the program was set up to try to get around this but it really was not equipped to do this realistically at the time. They had every intention I feel to encourage treatment, and they were willing to fund it and idealistic about it, but the reality was that there simply was not enough space available for everyone who need it the most. In my humble opinion, it was better than nothing since they did have counselors and daily group sessions organized to check in with the individuals to help them and to eventually match them with a…

The support group I attended was on October 19th, 2012 at 12pm at Wesley Church located on Barstow Avenue. It was in the Winterburg Education Building in room 3. A gentleman by the name of Andy was leading the group. He first said a prayer and then asked if there were any new members. There were none so he asked if there were visitors. I introduced myself and said I was a Fresno State nursing student. He then said today they were going to talk about Step 12, which was about service. Service was about introducing AA to people that could benefit from the program. Before you were expected to complete step 12, they wanted you to complete steps 1-11 first. The first person that spoke about his past was the leader, Andy. He shared with everyone that he had had three divorces and at one point his children didn’t talk to him. Alcoholism destroyed his life in his early years. He’s now twenty years sober. His last wife never came back to him but his children have since come back into his life. He leads AA meetings now because he expressed how AA helped him get his life back into order.…

The similarities between Promise Hospital and Tri City Medical Center, is to provide “patient care” ranging from long term and mental conditions as well as acute care. While the three organizations specifically cater to a particular need, ultimately, quality of life is its main objective. However, it does have several differences. Tri City Medical Center, for example, provides a wide range of medical capabilities, from acute to chronic care. It has full surgical range with an intensive care unit. Acute care services range from emergency care to post surgical recovery and other short-term medical condition. Sharp Mesa Vista also provides a wide range of healthcare services. In particular, the Mental Healthcare facility provides services regarding substance abuse, depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, eating and behavioral disorders. It caters to adults, children, and adolescents while providing both cognitive and dual recovery treatment. Lastly, Promise Hospital, a long term care facility, provides care to those who are not able to care for themselves and for an indefinite amount of time, for example; individuals that are in renal failure and will require dialysis, or life support. These needs are best suited in a facility that have the necessary equipment…
