Providencia alcalifaciens is a gram-negative bacterium belongs to the family Enterobacteriaceae and has been implicated as a causative agent of diarrhea in children and travelers [1-5]. It has also been isolated from a broad range of living organisms such as chickens, dogs, piglets, and cows [6]. The etiological role of P. alcalifaciens has been established through case–control studies of diarrhea and pathogenicity studies of the isolates [1,2,7]. Both in vitro and in vivo studies demonstrated that P. alcalifaciens can invade cultured mammalian cells and intestinal tissues, cause diarrhea in rabbits, and induce fluid accumulation in rabbit ileal loop model [5, 7-9].
