2.4 The Advantages of Presentation - based Activities
Chitravelu (1995:294) says that if language learning is to be effectives, students must have the opportunity to use that language. They must actively listen, speak, read and write the language in the classroom. It is a common thing when we keep on doing and practicing on certain skill, after some practices we could see the result, where it helps us to master that specific skill. The same goes to students if they are given the opportunity to use the English language during the learning process and they keep on practicing to communicate in English, they will have a great opportunity to be able to communicate effectively in that language as from time to time they will be familiarized with it.
Referring to Idrus, Md. Nordin and Su Li (2004) this is further approved by an English Language Communication Workshop which had been conducted by Hairuzila, Shahrina and Chong. The objective of the workshop was to promote oral communication skills amongst the participants and build their confidence in using the English language. One of the activities that were carried out was oral presentation. 64% of the participants said that they like the activity. Even though they were scared and nervous, they were surprised to find that they actually able to do it. Language teachers should always try to install this idea into their students’ mind in order to encourage them to speak up in class and to express their opinion in public.
Research by Manghubai (2006) on the processes of second language acquisition and learning stated that, to become fluent in a language, one must practice using it. Language learning occurs best when learners are encouraged in encoding and decoding meanings in acts of communication. One of the reasons why students face difficulty when it comes to speaking skill is because they were not given the chance to use the English language during the lesson.
