According to Pyne after 9/11 Americans have been exceedingly prejudice against Muslims and Arab Americans. Pyne believes that the reaction from Americans is due to the United States government’s response and actions by the terrorist attacks. Pyne also believes that the government used the patriot act as a way to encourage discrimination.
Orientalism is the attempt to understand Muslims and Arabs from the East; the learning Eastern languages and Islamic sciences, literature and religious beliefs. (The Hamdard Islamicus, Vol. XXIV, No. 4).
After the 9/11 attacks there were strong negative feelings towards other countries tied to Muslims and Arabs. As Pyne suggested in this article Americans felt that treating the Muslims and Arab Americans like they were not Americans and should be shipped back to their countries, was away to show their support for their own country, the United States.
I believe that local towns and city could do numerous things to promote tolerance. Most of the hate crimes, prejudice, and discrimination of a certain race are from the lack of knowledge of ones culture and beliefs. Cities and Towns should promote the different cultures and beliefs in public places, like schools and town meetings. If the local government was supportive of the different cultures it will encourage others to be less prejudice. Individuals that are not prejudice or believe in discriminating against others should set up gatherings of different types of cultures. People may also encourage friends of other cultures to participate in organization or events. This will show others that they are Americans just as they are.
