DIVERSITY POLICY: AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE FORCE
STATEMENT:
“To value the Australian Defence force’s differences, rather than avoid uniqueness”
The Australian Defence Force recognises the differences of members amongst its diverse workforce. Differences have always existed, as it is part of human condition (Patrickson & Obrien 2001, p.2). Factors that may result to diversity and equity are those of different age, gender, race, religion, education, disability, sexual preference and further factors. It is a core value of the Australian Defence Force. We value the uniqueness of all employees and take this opportunity to utilise their differences in a positive conduct to generate operational efficiency and productivity within the Australian Defence Force.
The Australian Defence Force will create flexibility and acceptance of all types of differences and actively cater the workplace procedures to all employee needs.
SCOPE:
This diversity policy applies to the entire Australian Defence Force academy. This includes the Royal Australian Navy, Australian Army and the Royal Australian Air Force. All ranks of members of the Australian Defence Force community are included within this policy.
DIVERSITY AND EQUITY LEGISLATION GUIDLINE:
All ranks of the Australian Defence Force are covered by the following Commonwealth Human rights legislation that relate to the aspects of diversity and equity. The legislation within the Australian government realises a range of diversity traits within the workforce and there several acts that are set to operate within the workplace to prevent discrimination. (Australian Defence Force Academy 2008)
Fair Work Act 2009:
The act states that an employer must not take adverse action against an employee because of sex, race, colour, sexual preference, age, physical or mental disability, marital status, pregnancy, political views, national extraction or social origin.
