Art is usually perceived as art when it grasps a response from the perceiver, physically and emotionally. What determines whether it is ‘art’ or not is the artist himself, and any other person whom would perceive it; it can not be a universal decision, nor can one be told right from wrong. We are all aware of the cliché saying, “One man’s trash, is another man’s treasure”, and I believe it to be true for we all perceive things differently, and what might be beautiful to one, can be dull and ugly to another.
The idealist theory states that the actual work of art is non-physical: it is an idea or emotion; if this statement is true then would it not be up to the individual mind to decide? Surely you can not convince one to think otherwise, against their beliefs, it would be wrong to do so.
I therefore believe that artists are not the only people who can decide whether their work is art, for it is evident that art is judged by a point of view, an individual choice, the idea and meaning behind the composition, if we do not have our own minds to decide what is ‘art’ then how can we be expected to produce it?

In today’s world we are over ruled by power; no matter how hard we try to think for ourselves and be an individual mind we can only go to a certain extent, then we conform to other ideas, we are brainwashed into thinking we are making these decisions for ourselves when in reality we are not, we do not realize how much power really does influence our decisions, the way we act and think. Our actions and decisions can make a big impact on someone’s life, think about all the selfish acts that occur in our day to day life, whether we personally do it ourselves or perceive some one else doing so. We hardly ever stop to think about these situations, and how it will affect yourself and others.
