Persuasive Essay

Writing is a process. Throughout my entire educational experience I have had to write a number of essays, term papers, book reports, and poetry using a variety of techniques. Some of these projects came to me easily while others I struggled with. Along this writing journey I have learned how to open my mind to writing, express myself with a variety of words, and use a number of methods of story telling. Another valuable lesson I have learned about the writing process was editing and revising drafts can and will lead to a great final paper.
My earliest memory of a writing assignment was in Mrs. Minkoff’s fourth grade English class. She had a glass fish bowl filled with tiny folded pieces of paper in it. The bowl was passed around the room as each student chose one of those pieces of paper. Then it was my turn to choose one of those pieces of paper. I opened the paper and my worst fears came true; the writing on the paper said, “A book report on whales.” For some reason the anxiety of writing that report sticks with me to this day. I didn’t know anything about whales except that they lived in the ocean. I also noticed that my class, as a whole, was nervous about there own writing projects. So I settled my nerves, set my mind to the task at hand, and started out afterschool to the tiny public library at the end of my street. I eagerly enter the learning facility desperate to find the right books so I could write the best book report Mrs. Minkoff has ever read. At this point in my education writing a book report was a new experience and needless to say a daunting task for a 10 year old. After a week or so reading about whales, writing my simple sentences, and trying to form those sentences into flowing, coherent paragraphs, I finished what I thought was a masterpiece.
