Personal Values & Ethics

George Orwell is quoted in saying, “On the whole human beings want to be good, but not too good, and not quite all the time.” Ethics is a branch of philosophy concerned with moral principles and values (Marshall, 2009). Values and ethics are what govern personal and professional life. I believe in honesty, adaptability, dependabiltiy, loyalty, fairness, integrity, brilliance, compassion and modesty. In my personal and professional life I try to exemplify these values and qualtities. I am govern to see these qualities in myself and others,who may or may not deserve my trust.
Values are developed in many different ways. Family has a major part in establishing values. Parents create a foundation which allows children to make healthy choices on their own (Ramirez, 2001). The values parents advocate become a moral guide and form the blueprint of the conscience. The conscience is what governs established sense of values and ethics. Unfortuantely, the days of stay home moms are dwindling and the relationship between child and parents are no longer as complete as it once was. In fact, today’s parents are spending less and less time with the child (New Delhi, 2005). This is not an excuse, parents who work now just have to make quality count compared to quantity. My parents both worked but they instilled values in my life that has carried my through adulthood.
The constant and rapid increase of information both available and necessary instruction given in school help develop cognitive development (Ian Barr, 1991). Schools are one of the first entities of structure in life. Schools adhere to a set of rules you have to follow with student codes of conduct and with peer interaction. Schools have always been interested in three kinds of outcomes skills, knowledge and character. Sometimes character is stated about in terms of citizenship. Educators are interested in building positive, productive citizens.
