Personal Narrative: Maximum Ride
I used to love reading. In kinder and first, my nose was stuck in a Magic Tree House book. Third, fourth, and fifth grade I basically lived at Hogwarts (in my rightfully sorted house, of course, I am a proud Hufflepuff). And in middle school, I discovered THE tween series of my generation, Maximum Ride. Reading was exciting, and even though I had done it for years every time I picked up a book it felt so novel. I was your ordinary bookworm until seventh grade when the joint power of Ms. Green’s teaching and James Patterson’s writing broke my will to read.

Maximum Ride started off as this amazing (at least in an eleven-year old's opinion) trilogy about 6 genetically mutated kids who had been stolen from/ given from various adoption agencies and parents. Each child had wings and an extra power unique to them. They were raised in dog cages at an evil inhumane science lab, they called “the school” until one of the doctors

But I really fell behind in seventh grade when I was in Mr. Green’s class. Ms. Green was a strange teacher, she almost always ignored the girl students but gave the guys a little too much attention. Long story short, she crept out all the guys who had her and pissed off all the overachieving girls who asked a lot of questions and thrived off teachers' advice. We had SSR time every day, but the vibe in the room was always tense and a little awkward, which made it really hard to get wrapped up in a good story. We all ended up just skimming the pages and passing notes or doing other homework. Once I got out of the habit of reading I kept making excuses, saying I was “too busy” or “they're no books that look interesting to me.” If I really think about it, seventh grade wasn’t the only thing that broke my good habit of reading.     My brother never was, and still isn’t, very fond of reading. For this reason, most of these books were simple comics forced upon him by his teachers and then left to collect dust in my mother’s room. As they say, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. I would eagerly breeze through these books, Captain Underpants, and Ricky Ricotta’s Mighty Robot, were two which I favored because they kept going. I had a much longer period of time to spend with the characters that I would grow so fond of, and more adventures of theirs to observe and enjoy.     The trail out back the beauty of nature and the smell of the fresh air. The leaves they’re falling all around you.     Rodriguez made it clear that he was emotionally disconnected from the books he read even though he continued to read more and more. Growing up as a student it is very hard to relate to books that most of the time has nothing to do with what’s going on in one’s life.
