Personal Narrative: Lake Winnipesaukee
“Click, click, click” I stand up after buckling my snowboard bindings and glance out across the horizon. I see the deep blue’s of Lake Winnipesaukee and the cool icy blues over the scattered coves. I look ahead and realize that I am the last one to start down the fresh packed powder trail. Quickly I hop along to gain speed to catch up to my family. My twin brother Alex is leading the pack. He turns around gesturing the race is on, but he quickly flies out of sight around a bend. I lift my left heel then my right heel almost immediately after to turn right. The edges of the board slice through the snow propelling me forward as I cut deeper into the snow. Using the reverse of this skilled technique I veer into a hard left turn. Carving right and …show more content…
This is my chance to pass him. There is path through the woods; I've been through it a thousand times so I know I can beat him. I dart into the woods cutting left and right to dodge the oncoming trees. My heart beating fast, one wrong move and I’ll be stopped in my tracks by a tree. Carving back and forth I maneuver my flexible board over bumps and between trees. There is a hard right turn up ahead; I’m going too fast but if I slow down he will win. My competitive nature kicks into gear. Bounding around the hazardous corner I emerge from the dangerous glades to an open slope. I turn around to see Alex far up the trail. I can see his anger he thought he was in the lead.
To celebrate my victory I spin in circles on my board. Moving my balance from both feet to my right foot the front of my board rises off the snow. While still spinning, I reach my right hand back to the tail of my board. The nose of the board elevates higher into the air. I can hear Alex getting closer. With the launch of one snowball I am thrown to the ground. My shoulder hits first. The impact doesn’t hurt but is enough momentum to make me slide down the powdered

Our whole wagon train met at the front entrance and we left Fort Kearney together. It was a nice stay, but we had to keep moving. As we were traveling on the trail, we were stopped by the South Platte River. We need to cross the river in order to follow a stream that heads to the North. We check if there were bridges around the place since the water was shallow, but we saw no bridge. We decided to use the sand bar we saw so we can get across the river. As we crossed the river, Michael almost fell off the sand bar with his 13 year old son. Luckily Curtis pulled him up and we were successfully able to cross the river.…

Nestled within western Hennepin County and Carver County, Minnesota, Lake Minnetonka holds unique meaning for different people. The retreating Wisconsin Glacier of the last Ice Age that produced melted blocks of ice, gave life and form to this island lake. It was Alexander Ramsey, Minnesota’s territorial governor in 1852, who gave Lake Minnetonka its name. The lake is also commonly known as the Big Waters, deriving that nickname from the Sioux language in which “Minne” means water and “Tonka” means big or great. As the ninth largest lake in Minnesota, Lake Minnetonka features several islands, a series of interconnecting bays including Haltsed Bay and Grays Bay, and it covers 22.2 square miles of water, boasting roughly 110 miles of beautiful…

The University of California, Merced’s Men’s Basketball team was so enthusiastic, as well as full of energy that humid Saturday morning as they prepared for an extraordinary adventure at Lake Yosemite. Each player greets Dr. Boggs, also thanking him for taking his time off from work in the health center to take them to the lake. Dr. Boggs, feeling warm-hearted and comforted, appreciated the well-mannered basketball players and cannot wait to get out in the lake. “I have brought my boat out here today so you guys can get the full lake experience, but I need to go over some safety procedures. I also need to explain to you all what exactly we will be doing today.”-Dr. Boggs.…

“If you're getting rad and there is no one around to see it, are you really getting rad?” (Andy Hayes) This question proposed by Andy Hayes is a tough one to answer, and is one that puzzles skiers and snowboarders across the world. On one hand, you just nailed a totally righteous line that would undoubtedly leave you're alpine counterparts flabbergasted. On the other hand, nobody saw it, and will anybody actually believe your word when you tell them of your incredible feats. Besides for the question of are you getting rad, another must be answered; how rad did you actually get? We can all brag and rant about how amazingly we skied a line, but there must be a quantitative way to prove who got the raddest.…

I can see the sun glistening off the snow covering the treetops as I glide down the mountain. Suddenly I feel a lot of snow sprayed on me as my dad speeds past in his usual perfect formation, as if he’s a slalom skier about to pass the finish line. He goes around a bend, following the curve of the trail, and skis out of sight. When I finally catch up to him I am shocked at what I see. My dad is getting up from a fall – he never falls – and both his skis and poles are scattered around the trail. In all his years of skiing, as far as I know, my dad has never been injured despite some careless falls. As I ski down to my dad I pick up his matching black skis and poles. I get closer to him and see a look in his eyes that worries me. I hide my concern and calmly ask, “Are you okay?”…

The known obstacles are avoided with ease. Then suddenly a hidden obstacle appears, attempting to change my course and thwart my efforts to stay on the road of life. I slam my breaks, and screech to a halt: attempting to avoid a disaster on the road of life. I navigate around the obstacle with care but it can not be avoided. My paint is scratched and my body is dented but I will survive. Once clear of the obstacle I floor it, back on the road of life attacking every corner and straight away. Lap after lap, race after race, season after season I attack the road of life. I return to the garage every so often to have my maintenance. New parts, paint, and tires. I keep returning to the road of life, each time knowing more and more. I have become an expert know. No obstacle is a surprise, and all dangers are known. I am at the peak of my race on the road of life. Powerful and graceful, a beast I have become. it seems as if no competitors can challenge me. I am a champion on the road of life. My ignorance is growing. I overlook the unproven racers. Fear is not building. I stop attacking and become complacent. Eventually other cars come along. They try to pass me on the road of life. At first they fail. Being a veteran racer I skillfully thwart their effort to pass me. As time goes on and more distance is covered the other cars creep up on me. They are now veterans as well, racers ready to pass me on the road of life. I try to block them, but I can do no more. They overtake me and speed away down the road of life. I have been defeated. My crew calls me to the garage, they know it is time. As I slow I realize that my time has come. I am ready to accept that my time as a racer is done. I fear for the worst. Will I be taken apart, or left for scrap in a rust filled lot where all hope is gone? I am filled with fear once more as my future is unknown. I am kept in my dark garage, not knowing what is going on with the…

I’m looking down a steep long hill paved with black concrete. I start kicking at it from on top of my long board skate deck to gain momentum going forward. There is no need to push because gravity is all that I need to get going but with the need for speed attitude I can’t help but want to go faster. I give one last tug at my helmet to make sure it’s on tight before I go into my tuck because one mistake without the proper safety equipment at the speeds I’m about to encounter can cause me my brain. I bend my knees and crouch close to my board. I hide my back leg behind my front one by tucking in my knee behind the other so that aerodynamics can help me go faster. I lean forward in front of the board and keep my arms behind me. The speed and gravity somehow help me lean far in front of the board so far out that without going that fast I would fall flat on my face. I start to pick up some real speed and the imaginary speedometer in my head just starts to race higher and higher. As I’m hitting top speeds my eyes start to water from the wind hitting my face. The trees start to fly by my peripheral vision, along with light posts and yes dangerously enough sometimes even stop signs. I look down at my board to make sure my feet are placed right and can see the concrete flowing under me. At this speed the ground looks like static on a television because of all the dust and rocks.…
