Parents! What’s A Kid to Do?
Parents these days! Go do this. Go do that. Pick up your room. You did what? Orders, Orders, Orders: rarely a question, usually a demand. Parents! What’s a kid to do? These two unique individuals have been given the rewarding charge of helping me and the rest of you to become productive and upstanding citizens. This situation that we find ourselves in is not our choice, but our fate in this young life. In addition to holding down part time jobs, taking a full load in school, and dating people right and left, dealing with parents is ranked right up there with root canals and obnoxious school teachers. Parents come in all shapes, sizes, and attitudes. Some are wealthy and have great jobs. Some are just your average Joe with average jobs and average incomes, like the majority of Americans. Then there are those parents who struggle just to get by. No matter the shape, size, or level of income, parents still must be reckoned with.
I have been thinking about parents a great deal lately. I deal with them twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. In fact, there are only eight months until Independence Day! 6:00 a.m. mom barrels into my room as if I should already be showered, dressed, and with a smile on my face. Um, I don’t think so. “Amy, wake up. If I have to wake you up one more time!” Like I said earlier, rarely a question, usually a demand. 7:00 a.m. I’m still in bed and mom is becoming more infuriated. 8:00 a.m. mom is calling me again, “Are you up? Are you ready? Do you have your lunch?” Finally, a question, but did you hear her tone? The general is finally occupied in her day’s routine. Off to school I go, only to have the routine repeated later in the day.
What is it about parents always on your case, in your business, and in your stuff? Our parents seem to be living out a dream to want to be a private investigator, police officer, or heaven forbid a school administrator by their nosy and know it all attitudes....
