What happens in a working environment that becomes more sophisticated and competitive every day? How to differentiate? In a recent survey by Maconomy, a global provider of consultancy-specific business solutions, one hundred visitors at an MCA event held in London, were questioned about this topic. A vast majority of the management consultants agreed upon the fact that their businesses are under a lot of pressure. Clients, becoming more experienced in purchasing consulting services, are looking for the most exquisite people in the business. They often add a “consulting purchaser” to their purchase department, in order to increase pricing pressure, without compromising on the quality of the services. This leads to two other important elements. The client driven market, will make it more difficult to find outstanding specialists, and consulting firms will need to pay more attention as to how their differentiation strategy combines with balanced staffing needs. As Stewart, R. (2005) affirms, “In a very crowded market place and with buyers of consulting services becoming increasingly sophisticated, management consultancy firms are under increasing pressure to differentiate and offer specialist advice. To succeed in the new consulting environment it is vital that consulting companies plan their project resources effectively which includes the ability to source and manage associate staff."
Why is it, that this market place is under such pressure? Too often in the past twenty years, consulting firms have not provided the solutions expected by clients. These companies have given the entire industry a questionable reputation. A lack of pragmatic approach, bad or no skills transfer, leverage, specialist knowledge, originality and genuine partnership, together with not being able to put the right people in the right place are the most important reproaches that have been made.
