1. Use a dash to enclose a sentence element that interrupts the train of thought. Use dashes to set off a parenthetical element that contains a comma and that might be misread if set off commas. Use a dash to introduce words that summarize a preceding series. Pg. 87 A dash is equal to a parentheses. Parentheses are used for sharper breaks than a dash is.
2. Use square brackets around parenthesis within a parenthesis, so that levels of subordination can easily be distinguished. Pg 92
3. The exclamation point should rarely be used in a research paper.
4. Place a question mark outside a closing mark if the quoted passage is a question. Place a question mark outside if the quotation ends a sentence that is a question. If a question mark occurs where a comma or period would normally be required, omit the comma or period. Pg. 93
Where does Whitman speak of “the meaning of poems”?
“Have u felt so proud to get at the many of poems?” Whitman asks.
5. In research papers and manuscripts submitted for publication, words that would be italicized in print are best underlined. Underling is used to be more distinctive in ones writing, its better than using italicized words. Pg. 94
6. Write out numbers if can be abbreviated in two words. Unless it is a scientific paper, where one has to use small numbers often. Other wise write out all numbers that can be abbreviated in two words or less. Pg 98
7. Names of books, plays, and long poems published as a books, pamphlets, newspapers, magazines, journals, films, radio, television program, compact discs, audiocassettes, recorded albums, ballets, operas, and paintings, work of sculpture, ships, aircrafts, and spacecrafts. Pg. 104
8. Use of quotation marks for the titles of works published within larger works, example, essays and short stories. Pg 105
9. Sacred writings are NEVER underlined, examples, the Bible, Genesis, and Gospels. Pg 107...
